Soothing, smokey and spiced. This hojicha chai (aka hojichai) latte is the perfect drink to wind down with.

What you’ll need:

For the Hojicha Chai Latte:

  • 3g hojicha powder (we used our Organic Kyoto Hojicha)
  • 40ml warm water (max 80°C)
  • 200ml milk of choice (oat milk pairs beautifully)
  • 15–20ml chai syrup (adjust to taste)

Optional topping:

  • Star anise
  • Cinnamon

How to make it:

Whisk the hojicha
Sift 3g of hojicha powder into a bowl. Add warm water and whisk until smooth and lightly frothy.

Spice up the milk
Add your milk and ice to the glass and gently pour in your chai syrup*.

*No chai syrup? Make your own:
Simmer 250ml water with:

  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3-4 cardamom pods (lightly crushed)
  • 3 cloves
  • ½ tsp ground ginger or a few slices of fresh ginger
  • 1 star anise
  • Black peppercorns (optional)

Let it simmer for 10–15 minutes, then strain. Add sugar to taste while warm and stir until dissolved. Store in the fridge and use as needed.

Bring it together
Gently add the whisked hojicha to your chai milk, make sure to pour slowly on the ice to get distinguished layers.

Finish
Float a star anise on top for a decorative touch.

Sip and savour
Enjoy the mellow roasted notes of hojicha wrapped in warming chai spices, this combination is grounding, smooth, and deeply comforting.
